CruiseCritic.com, "Boards", "Ports of Call", "Alaska".

There are going to be very few, if any, cruises from LA or SFO; Seattle is a better bet. Ten-day itinerary will also limit your choices. With the deals out there now, you might want to consider a 14-day, back-to-back cruise. Might be cheaper than going one-way [most Alaska cruises are one-way] and then paying airfare for return.

Alaska is fabulous.
Take the Alaska Marine Highway ferry system. Since many of Alaska's communities are coastal and there are few inland highways in some parts of Alaska, the Alaska Marine Highway ferry system is how most Alaskans get around. This is also a great way for tourists to see Alaska. There are many different routes. You can visit many different towns. You can jump ship for a few hours a some locations. Or you could stay for a few days and catch the next ferry to continue along. There are small cabins (with bathroom/shower) or in nice weather you can camp out on deck. There are park rangers on these ferries who will help point out whales and dolphins and porpoises. And they run seminars throughout the day. The cafeterias offer tasty fresh food. You can drive your car onto the ferry or you could rent when you get further north. I highly recommend this way to travel. Much better than a cruise - smaller, more intimate, friendly, much much less expensive, more versatile, able to go to travel to more locations than a cruise ship (due to smaller size.) Also you can hook up with the BC Ferry system from Vancouver or Seattle.
Enjoy your trip. It's stunningly beautiful!

Great choice for a cruise. Congrats on 10 years. I have cruised to Alaska over 25 times. All lines pretty much much stop at the same ports of call. I have cruised Norwegian Princess & Holland. Enjoyed each. Besides prices & activities Holland had better food. But, have cruised with the others many times since. It really comes down to what you like. Alaska is mainly seeing the wildlife, scenery and for your first cruise the experience and you will will also meet some Amazing people from all over.
The best tip I can offer you is to take a cab from the airport to ship. Seattle Airport is very nice however the cruise lines (all) gather the people in one area to wait for buses. It gets crowded & noisy. A Cab with tip is $50.00 for 2 & takes 20 minutes or less.
Enjoy. Also going in May on a cruise tour.

First, let me make some minor corrections from the previous posting:

Any cruise going to Alaska will require a passport as they all port in Victoria, British Columbia Canada when sailing out of Seattle.

The White Pass and Yukon Rail Road only travels between Skagway and as far north as Carcross (not Whitehorse; last train from Whitehorse Sept. 1982, and I was on it) Yukon Territory Canada.

Skagway has all paved streets and has for many, many years, the rest is good to go.

Now as far as where to go, lodges and such:

The list can get quite long and extensive. I would recommend a circular trip from Anchorage towards Homer if fishing the mission, crossing Prince William Sound on the Alaska Marine Highway (The Ferry) to Valdez and then overland to Chitna and McCarthy and spend some time at the Kennecott; on to Fairbanks, And then head south to Denali, and Talkeetna, before returning to Anchorage.

This is obviously only the tip of the iceberg but a good start overall. There are a tone more sites I could steer you to; but as you can see, which way to go?

You might want to consider a more inclusive tour, that covers much of the area you want to see. I have included my companies web address (saved teh best for last) and you can do just a land only tour, or we can customize an entire itinerary for you. Check some of the web sites listed for more ideas and pictures.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

I live there and am a travel pro.

You are taking on a very big project for Alaska, especially looking for an all inclusive lodge. help me out by narrowing your scope just a touch. What do you mean all inclusive? Are you traveling through the state or are you staying put in the lodge? What is the make up of your group in terms of shared accommodations?

There are many facilities that offer lots of activities on property, and in some very remote and gorgeous areas.

I would be looking out of the Anchorage bowl to start, possibly the Kenai Peninsula, or in the Matanuska Valley, but again without more specific information in regards to your group dynamic, it is gonna be difficult to to give you recommendations.

I have given you a few suggestions, and this by no means an exhaustive listing, but should help get you started. I would be more than happy to assist you in your Alaska adventure, so don't hesitate to contact me in this regard, as I am a Alaskan Travel Professional.

Well, it's nothing unusual. You can find this type of behavior at many other places, where they 'force' you to buy packages that you really don't want. Why is this? Simply because they can earn much more with packages like that. Of course, it is also true that probably the majority of people are actually looking for such complete packages.
I have the same problem like you and it actually happened that I gave up on certain places and went somewhere else because I just couldn't find a place where I could decide what to do.
I'd say, we're the suffering minority here...
